Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to prioritise integrity, sacrifice and service to the people.
Obi made the call during a political gathering in Abuja on Saturday, where stakeholders and aspirants from different political movements met to discuss the future of leadership in the country.
He said Nigeria needs leaders who are focused on solving real problems rather than making promises that cannot be fulfilled. According to him, issues such as insecurity, unemployment, inflation, weak infrastructure and poor healthcare must be addressed with practical solutions.
Obi stressed that leadership should not be about personal gain but about improving the lives of citizens. He warned aspirants against politics driven by selfish interest, saying such behaviour continues to weaken public trust in government.
He also called on political actors to reject violence, vote buying and manipulation of elections. He said integrity should begin from the process of seeking office, not only after winning elections.
Obi noted that the country can only move forward when leaders put national interest above ethnic or religious divisions. He added that unity and fairness remain key to building a stronger Nigeria.

He said a true national leader must serve all citizens equally, warning that leaders who only trust people from their own ethnic group fail to represent the country as a whole.
Also speaking at the event, former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso called for stronger commitment to justice and unity among political leaders and citizens.
Kwankwaso, who was represented at the event, said Nigeria’s challenges are largely caused by a lack of sincere leadership and accountability. He encouraged emerging leaders to remain focused on national development.
He also expressed confidence in grassroots political movements and said they play an important role in shaping democratic participation across the country.
Leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) also addressed the gathering, assuring members that the party would conduct fair and transparent primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party’s national secretary dismissed claims that it had already chosen preferred candidates, saying all aspirants would be given equal opportunity.
Organisers of the event said the meeting brought together supporters of different political movements who are working towards building a stronger political alliance ahead of the next election cycle.
The discussions ended with renewed calls for responsible leadership and greater participation of young Nigerians in shaping the country’s democratic future.
