MEXICO CITY — Colombia began their FIFA World Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over tournament debutants Uzbekistan on Wednesday, inspired by a standout performance from Luis Diaz at the Estadio Azteca.
The Bayern Munich forward played a decisive role in the win, contributing a goal and an assist as Colombia overcame a spirited challenge from the Central Asian side in front of 80,824 spectators.
The result sends Colombia to the top of Group K after Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the day.
Colombia took the lead five minutes before halftime when Diaz delivered a lofted pass into the penalty area for Daniel Munoz, who volleyed home to give his side the advantage.
Uzbekistan responded strongly and drew level before the break through Abbosbek Fayzullaev, whose close-range header from a rebound became his country’s first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup.
The equaliser came after Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas parried Eldor Shomurodov’s volley into the path of Fayzullaev, who reacted quickest to nod the ball into the net.
Diaz Inspires Colombia Victory
Diaz restored Colombia’s lead in the second half with a strike that Uzbekistan goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov will feel he should have saved.
The Colombian attacker had been a constant threat throughout the match and also struck the post as Uzbekistan struggled to contain his movement and creativity.
Despite falling behind again, Uzbekistan continued to press for another equaliser and produced a determined performance in their first appearance on football’s biggest stage.
However, Colombia secured the points in stoppage time when Jaminton Campaz headed home a third goal to put the result beyond doubt.
The victory gives Colombia an early advantage in the race for qualification from Group K, while Uzbekistan will take encouragement from a competitive display despite opening their World Cup campaign with defeat.
Colombia will look to build on the result in their next group match as they seek a place in the knockout stages, while Uzbekistan must regroup quickly to keep their qualification hopes alive.
