TORONTO — Ghana secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match at the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, with Caleb Yirenkyi scoring deep into stoppage time to hand the Black Stars all three points.
Yirenkyi bundled home the winner in the fifth minute of added time at Toronto Stadium, sparking jubilant celebrations among thousands of Ghanaian supporters and ending a tense contest that appeared destined for a goalless draw.
The victory gives Ghana an early advantage in Group L after a match largely defined by defensive discipline and limited scoring opportunities.
Panama created the better chances in the opening half and almost made an immediate breakthrough when Cecilio Waterman tested goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi in the second minute. The Ghana shot-stopper reacted well to push the effort away.
Ghana struggled to threaten in attack before the break and failed to register a shot on target throughout the first half.
LATE DRAMA DECIDES TIGHT CONTEST
Playing in steady rain, both teams showed greater attacking intent after halftime as conditions deteriorated at the 43,000-capacity venue.
Panama came close to breaking the deadlock in the 60th minute when Cristian Martinez drove a powerful effort into the side netting, drawing a loud response from the sizeable Panamanian contingent in the crowd.
The match appeared set to end level until Yirenkyi struck in the closing moments, capitalising on a late opportunity to secure a crucial win for the four-time African champions.
Following the goal, Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz turned toward the stands and urged supporters to celebrate as his side completed a hard-fought victory.
The result marked another milestone for the veteran Portuguese manager, who became only the second coach to appear at five consecutive World Cups. Queiroz previously led Portugal at the 2010 tournament and Iran at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions.
The match was briefly interrupted by a second-half hydration break as heavy rain continued to fall, with loud boos echoing around the stadium from frustrated supporters.
Ghana earned the victory despite the absence of midfielder Thomas Partey. The Villarreal player was unavailable after Canadian authorities reportedly denied him a visa due to ongoing legal proceedings in Britain, where he faces rape charges.
The Black Stars will now look to build on their winning start when they return to action in their next Group L fixture, while Panama face increased pressure to secure points to keep their qualification hopes alive.
