Governor Alex Otti has approved the immediate commencement of a feasibility study for the proposed Azumini-Obeaku Seaport and Inland Waterways Corridor in Abia State, signalling early steps toward what could become a major logistics and trade infrastructure project.
The approval was announced on Tuesday during a meeting with officials of China Harbour Engineering Company Limited in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area.
Otti directed the firm to fast-track the study, noting that the proposed timeline of six to seven months was too long and should be shortened where possible.
According to the governor, while the project holds promise, the feasibility study remains critical in determining its viability. He also instructed relevant government agencies to begin the process of securing federal approvals alongside the study.

“We need to start the process immediately, hoping that the feasibility study will return positive because the study may also show that the project is not viable,” he said.
The governor further urged the company to conduct a physical inspection of the proposed site before proceeding, highlighting a key technical consideration: the location sits about 19 nautical miles from the high seas, a distance that may require significant dredging.

If successful, the Azumini-Obeaku corridor project could open up new inland waterways, improve cargo movement, and position Abia as a strategic player in Nigeria’s maritime and logistics ecosystem.
Still, for now, everything hinges on the outcome of the feasibility study, which will determine whether the ambitious project moves from concept to reality.
