Communications professional Ojo Maduekwe has criticised the political position of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, arguing that his involvement in both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) undermines credible opposition politics in Nigeria.
Maduekwe said Wike’s pledge to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election, while also claiming that his faction of the PDP is prepared to challenge the APC in 2027, presents a contradiction that weakens political accountability.
According to him, Wike’s simultaneous roles as a serving minister under the APC-led federal government and a key power broker within the PDP blur the line between government and opposition, making it difficult for the opposition party to function effectively.
He argued that such dual alignment erodes public trust and further diminishes the credibility of the PDP as a viable alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Maduekwe noted that Nigeria’s political history has included shifting alliances, but insisted that no politician had previously attempted to actively serve in government while also positioning themselves as a leader of the opposition.
He further suggested that Wike’s influence within both political structures risks reducing the PDP’s effectiveness, describing the situation as damaging to democratic competition.

As the country moves closer to the next election cycle, Maduekwe called on Wike to make a clear choice between remaining in the APC-led administration or fully committing to rebuilding the PDP as an opposition party.
He added that failing to separate both roles could continue to create confusion within Nigeria’s political space and weaken democratic accountability.
