A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Adetokunbo Pearse, has described Seyi Makinde as a strong presidential prospect, saying the Oyo State governor possesses the leadership qualities needed to govern Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview in Lagos on Tuesday, Pearse said growing calls from party loyalists and political stakeholders for Makinde to contest the 2027 presidential election reflect confidence in the governor’s capacity to lead the country.
According to him, Makinde has demonstrated a solid understanding of critical national issues, including security, economic management, fairness and modern governance, through his performance in Oyo State.
Pearse said the governor would attract significant support across the country if he secured the PDP presidential ticket.
“If Governor Seyi Makinde clinches the PDP ticket for president in 2027, the people of the South-West will support him because the Yoruba people appreciate an omoluabi, a distinguished gentleman in politics,” he said.
He added that Makinde’s record in Oyo State would also enhance his appeal in other regions, particularly the South-South and South-East, where voters would assess his developmental achievements over two terms as governor.

Pearse argued that the governor’s approach to governance and security would also resonate with voters in Northern Nigeria.
Describing Makinde as part of a new generation of leaders, Pearse said Nigerians are increasingly looking for younger, more dynamic and technologically savvy politicians.
“Makinde is youthful, in his 50s. He is dynamic and visionary. Makinde’s generation has come of age,” he said.

He stressed the need for a transition from the older political class to a younger crop of leaders better equipped to address contemporary challenges.
According to Pearse, the PDP has regained momentum and is positioning itself strongly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
