Monday Okpebholo has condemned the killing of a student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) who was shot dead by gunmen near the institution’s main gate in Benin City.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Edo State governor described the attack as an affront to human dignity and a serious threat to public safety.
The victim, whose identity had not been officially disclosed as of press time, was reportedly killed on Sunday near the Ugbowo campus shortly after completing his semester examinations.
Okpebholo said the murder was unacceptable and extended his condolences to the student’s family, friends and colleagues.
He disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force had launched an investigation, while other security agencies were working to track down those responsible for the attack.
The governor assured residents that the case would be thoroughly pursued and that those behind the killing would be brought to justice.
“This case will not be swept under the carpet,” he said.

Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling cultism and other violent crimes across the state through intensified security operations, closer collaboration with law enforcement agencies, community engagement and rehabilitation programmes for at-risk youths.
He stressed that Edo State would not become a safe haven for criminal elements.
