An unidentified student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been shot dead inside his vehicle near the main gate of the institution’s Ugbowo campus in Benin City, sparking renewed concerns over security around the university environment.
The incident occurred on Sunday shortly after the student reportedly completed his semester examinations.
Videos circulating online showed the victim slumped in the driver’s seat with a gunshot wound to the forehead, while several bullet holes were visible on the vehicle’s windscreen. Residents and passersby were seen gathered around the scene as the body remained inside the car.
The circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear, and the identity of the student had not been confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
In a statement, the university management expressed sadness over the incident but noted that the attack happened outside the campus and did not involve activities within the institution. The school suggested that the killing may have been linked to suspected cult-related violence.

The university urged students and staff to remain calm, vigilant and security conscious while continuing their academic activities.
Management also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safety within the campus environment and said it was monitoring the situation closely.
Attempts to reach the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, CSP Eno Ikoedem, were unsuccessful.
