More than 600 members of the PDP and Social Democratic Party (SDP) have defected to the All Progressives Congress in Kogi State, in what party leaders described as a boost to the ruling party’s growing influence in the state.
The defectors were formally received on Sunday by Kogi State Deputy Governor Joel Salifu during a grand reception held in Ofu Local Government Area. The event was organised in his honour by the Ofu Traditional Council and indigenes of the local government area, both at home and in the diaspora.
Speaking at the ceremony, Salifu thanked residents for the warm reception and urged them to continue supporting the APC at both state and national levels. He said the honour of producing the deputy governor should inspire stronger backing for the party and cautioned residents against politicians who only appear during election seasons.

The deputy governor reaffirmed his loyalty to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and expressed gratitude to former Governor Yahaya Bello for giving him the opportunity to serve. He said the Ododo administration remained committed to delivering development projects and improving living conditions across the state.
Salifu highlighted several interventions underway in Ofu, including road rehabilitation, transformer installations, renovation of primary schools, and water projects aimed at expanding access to clean drinking water. He also urged young people to avoid kidnapping, cultism and other criminal activities, stressing that the state government remained determined to tackle insecurity.

The traditional ruler of Ofu and Chairman of the Ofu Traditional Council, Akwu Obaje, said the event was organised to honour Salifu’s humility, loyalty and representation of the area in government. He commended Governor Ododo for appointing the deputy governor and called for additional government support in areas such as healthcare, roads, youth empowerment and rural development.
