The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a warning over fraudulent claims suggesting its involvement in the recovery of funds tied to a suspicious online marketing and earning platform known as “CPM”.
The agency said it received reports that operators of the platform allegedly told subscribers their systems had been hacked and demanded additional payments to “recover” lost funds, falsely claiming that NITDA was assisting in the process.
NITDA strongly denied any involvement, stressing that as Nigeria’s IT regulator, it does not request or collect money from citizens to resolve cybersecurity incidents, recover investments, or provide support to private platforms.

According to the agency, the claims represent a form of social engineering scam designed to exploit victims of online fraud by convincing them to make further payments under false pretences.
It warned members of the public to be cautious when dealing with online investment or trading platforms and to avoid sending additional funds in an attempt to recover earlier losses.
The agency also advised citizens to verify any claims of government involvement through official channels, refrain from sharing sensitive financial information with unverified entities, and report suspicious cyber-related activities to the appropriate authorities.
NITDA reaffirmed its commitment to cybersecurity awareness and the protection of Nigerians against online fraud and deceptive digital schemes.
