Taipei says platform targets individuals who share democratic values and want to provide information
TAIPEI — Taiwan has launched a new online platform inviting Chinese citizens to provide intelligence and information about activities in China, as tensions between Taipei and Beijing continue to escalate over security and sovereignty issues.
Taiwan’s National Security Bureau (NSB) announced the initiative, describing it as a secure reporting channel for individuals who “share the same values of democracy” and wish to collaborate by providing information related to developments in China.
The move comes amid growing concerns in Taiwan over what it describes as increasing espionage, infiltration and influence operations by Beijing.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly vowed to bring the self-governed island under its control, by force if necessary. Taiwan, meanwhile, rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims and has accused Chinese authorities of attempting to undermine its democratic institutions and national security.
As part of the launch, the NSB released a one-minute AI-generated video depicting a Chinese government employee witnessing colleagues being removed from their positions and subjected to investigations.
According to the bureau, the video was designed to illustrate what it described as a climate of fear and uncertainty under China’s political system.
The agency said the video reflects “a pervasive atmosphere that everyone is on edge under China’s totalitarian regime.”
Taiwanese officials added that an increasing number of individuals have recently contacted authorities seeking ways to provide information to agencies on the island.
The NSB said the new reporting mechanism was developed using practices similar to those adopted by intelligence agencies in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom and Israel.
Officials said submissions received through the platform would undergo rigorous screening and evaluation before any follow-up action is taken.
“The reporting channel is based on practices adopted by intelligence agencies in the United States, the United Kingdom and Israel,” the bureau said.
The NSB added that technology would be used to help verify and assess information submitted through the portal.
The launch of the platform highlights the continuing deterioration in relations between Taiwan and China, with both sides increasingly engaged in intelligence, cyber and information warfare.
Beijing has intensified military activities around Taiwan in recent years, while Taipei has strengthened security measures and expanded cooperation with international partners.
Taiwanese authorities did not provide further details on how the platform would operate or what protections would be available for individuals who choose to submit information.
The NSB had not responded to requests for additional comment as of Monday.
