ATLANTA — Czechia and South Africa will battle to keep their 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes alive when they meet in a crucial Group A match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday evening.
Both teams suffered defeats in their opening fixtures and enter the contest needing a victory to revive their chances of progressing to the knockout stage. Kick-off is scheduled for 18:00 CAT.
South Africa opened their campaign with a disappointing 2-0 loss to co-hosts Mexico in Mexico City on June 11. The defeat was compounded by the dismissals of Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane, who received straight red cards and will miss Thursday’s match through suspension.
The result extended Bafana Bafana’s winless run to six matches, with their last victory coming against Zimbabwe during the Africa Cup of Nations group stage.
Czechia also began the tournament on the losing side, falling 2-1 to South Korea in Guadalajara. The Europeans showed promise from set-piece situations but struggled to cope with South Korea’s pace and attacking play down the flanks.
With both sides yet to collect a point, Thursday’s encounter is widely viewed as a decisive fixture in the race for qualification from Group A.
Czechia coach Miroslav Koubek acknowledged his team’s shortcomings in their opening match and called for improvement in the final third.
“We really made some mistakes but also made opportunities,” Koubek said. “Our opponent was very fast. The better team won. We need to be more attacking and creative in the last 30 metres. In attack we have room for improvement.”
South Africa coach Hugo Broos expressed disappointment over the suspensions but remained optimistic about his team’s prospects.
“It’s not nice for both players to get a red card in the first game of the World Cup,” Broos said. “Now we have two players who cannot play the next game. But we still have a lot of players, so if we show the same mentality and play the same way as against Mexico, I’m sure we will have great results in the next two games.”
For Czechia, defender Ladislav Krejci is expected to play a key role after scoring against South Korea. The Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back will be relied upon to marshal the defence while also posing a threat from set pieces.
South Africa’s hopes could rest on the influence of midfielder Jayden Adams. The Mamelodi Sundowns player was among his side’s standout performers against Mexico and will be expected to provide energy and creativity in midfield.
The teams have met only once before. Their previous encounter ended in a 2-2 draw during the group stage of the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
