The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has condemned the sentencing of its leader, Julius Malema, describing the ruling as politically motivated and aimed at silencing opposition.
A South African court on Thursday sentenced the 45-year-old politician to five years in prison for illegal possession of a firearm and discharging it in public. The ruling followed an incident in 2018 when Malema fired a gun into the air during an EFF celebration.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate Twanet Olivier said Malema had deliberately violated firearm laws, stressing that such actions could not be excused, regardless of context. Shortly after the ruling, Malema’s legal team filed an appeal, seeking to overturn the conviction and sentence.
The development has further heightened political tensions in South Africa, where Malema remains one of the most vocal and controversial opposition figures.
In a strongly worded statement, the EFF insisted the case was pursued in a “highly politicised environment,” arguing that the punishment was excessive and inconsistent with the facts presented in court.
The party maintained that no one was harmed during the incident and described the act as symbolic rather than criminal. According to the EFF, the prosecution failed to demonstrate any real danger caused by the discharge of the firearm.
Malema’s defence team, led by advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, had argued that the case lacked sufficient merit to justify a custodial sentence. They also raised concerns about alleged procedural inconsistencies, including claims that a co-accused had his firearm returned before the conclusion of the trial.

The party further accused the National Prosecuting Authority of aggressively pursuing imprisonment in this case while struggling to secure convictions in more serious crimes such as murder and armed robbery.
Beyond the courtroom, the EFF linked the case to broader political dynamics, alleging that Malema has long been targeted by both local and international actors. The party specifically pointed to pressure from right-wing groups and remarks by Donald Trump as part of what it described as a wider effort to suppress radical political voices.

Despite the setback, the EFF called on its supporters to remain calm, reaffirming its backing for Malema and vowing to continue the legal fight through the appeal process.
