President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Romuald Wadagni on his election as president of Benin, describing the victory as a clear reflection of the confidence the Beninese people have placed in his leadership.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the Nigerian leader also pledged to strengthen bilateral ties between both countries, signalling a renewed push for regional cooperation at a time of shifting political and economic dynamics across West Africa.

Mr Wadagni, who previously served as Benin’s finance minister under outgoing president Patrice Talon, secured a decisive victory in the April 12 presidential election, reportedly winning more than 94 per cent of the vote. His emergence marks a transition in leadership that many observers see as a continuation of economic reform policies, given his technocratic background and experience managing Benin’s finances.

Reacting to the outcome, Mr Tinubu said the scale of the victory underscored the trust reposed in Mr Wadagni’s vision and track record in public service. He also commended the people of Benin for what he described as their resilience and commitment to democratic values throughout the electoral process.

Nigeria and Benin, neighbours with deep historical and cultural ties, have long maintained close relations, particularly in trade, border cooperation, and regional diplomacy. Mr Tinubu noted that these shared connections would serve as a strong foundation for deeper engagement under the incoming administration in Cotonou.

A push for stronger regional cooperation

Beyond the congratulatory message, the Nigerian president signalled a broader intention to work closely with the new Beninese government to strengthen economic collaboration and security coordination. He emphasised that both countries have a shared responsibility to address cross-border challenges while unlocking opportunities for growth.

According to him, enhanced cooperation would not only benefit Nigeria and Benin but also contribute to stability within the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union. These regional bodies, he noted, remain critical platforms for addressing collective issues such as trade integration, security threats, and economic development.

Mr Tinubu also expressed optimism about future partnerships, stressing that closer ties could help boost regional trade, improve infrastructure linkages, and support broader economic prosperity across West Africa.

He further wished Mr Wadagni success as he prepares to assume office, expressing confidence in his ability to lead Benin through its next phase of development. The Nigerian leader assured him of Nigeria’s support in advancing shared goals centred on peace, stability, and inclusive growth across the sub-region.

With leadership transitions unfolding across parts of West Africa, the development adds another layer to ongoing efforts by regional leaders to consolidate democratic governance while pursuing economic cooperation in an increasingly complex global environment.
