Military says victim receiving treatment as operations continue to hunt attackers
The Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force, has rescued the wife of late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar following intensified search and rescue operations conducted by troops of Operation Fasan Yamma.
The rescue was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the Defence Headquarters and signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Samaila Uba.
According to the military, troops made contact with suspected bandits at Tunga Village during sustained offensive operations, leading to the successful recovery of Mrs. Abubakar.
She was immediately evacuated from the area and taken to a military medical facility, where she is currently receiving treatment and care.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria said it remains committed to ensuring Mrs. Abubakar’s full recovery and is providing all necessary support to her and her family.
The military also vowed to sustain ongoing operations aimed at tracking down and neutralising those responsible for the abduction and the death of the retired senior officer.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains committed to ensuring her full recovery while providing all necessary support to the family,” the statement said.
Major General Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife were abducted by bandits in May while travelling through Katsina State.
The incident sparked widespread concern within military and security circles due to the retired officer’s distinguished service record and status as a former military spokesman.
On June 6, a video circulated online showing the couple in captivity, appealing to the Katsina State Government to secure their release by releasing detained bandits and their livestock.
The circumstances surrounding the retired general’s death in captivity were not immediately disclosed by authorities.
The remains of the late Major General Abubakar were laid to rest on Saturday at the Gidan Dawa Cemetery in Katsina State.
His death has drawn condolences from military personnel, government officials and members of the public, many of whom have called for intensified efforts to combat banditry and insecurity across the country.
The rescue of Mrs. Abubakar is being viewed as a significant breakthrough in ongoing military operations against criminal groups operating in the North-West region.
Security forces have pledged to continue offensive operations until those responsible for the attack are apprehended and brought to justice.
