Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State have endorsed Sharafadeen Alli as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election, signalling an early move to consolidate internal unity ahead of the polls.

The decision was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ibadan, where party leaders said the endorsement followed a series of consultations across different blocs within the APC.

Among those present at the meeting were former senator Ayo Adeseun, South West Development Commission director Fatai Ibikunle, former state APC chairman Akin Oke, and former secretary to the state government Akin Olajide.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Adeseun said the gathering was convened specifically to affirm Alli as the party’s preferred candidate, noting that the move was influenced by consultations with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He added that the president’s position as party leader makes his input critical in shaping such decisions.

According to him, aligning behind a single candidate would help the party avoid internal divisions and strengthen its chances in the election. Ibikunle echoed similar sentiments, urging other aspirants to support the consensus arrangement in the interest of party cohesion.

Responding to the endorsement, Alli thanked party leaders for their confidence and pledged to run an inclusive administration if elected. He also assured members that his leadership would prioritise unity and development across the state.

The endorsement comes amid growing interest in the APC ticket, with Adebayo Adelabu, a former minister of power, also considered a key contender. Adelabu recently stepped down from his ministerial role to focus on his governorship ambition, setting the stage for what could have been a competitive primary.

However, Friday’s consensus move suggests the party may be leaning toward a unified front, potentially reducing the likelihood of a contested primary as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.
