Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has publicly endorsed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the next governor of Lagos State, adding momentum to early political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obasa made the declaration during Hamzat’s visit to his official residence in Ikeja, where the deputy governor continued consultations with key stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I just returned from Abuja, and the conversation remains the same, Dr Obafemi Hamzat is the next governor of Lagos state,” Obasa said, while pledging support for Hamzat’s ambition.
The speaker praised Hamzat’s track record in governance, particularly his role in infrastructure development, while also highlighting his loyalty to the ruling party.
He urged party members and stakeholders to rally behind the deputy governor, signalling what could become a coordinated push within the APC ahead of the party’s primaries.
Obasa’s endorsement is significant given his influence within Lagos politics and the state assembly, positioning Hamzat as a leading contender in what is expected to be a competitive race.

In response, Hamzat thanked the speaker for the support, describing Lagos as a “collective project” that requires continuity and collaboration.
He emphasised that his consultations were not driven by personal ambition but by the need to sustain development and introduce innovation in governance.
“My consultations are about ensuring continuity, innovation, and inclusive development for our people,” he said.
The endorsement reflects growing political activity within Lagos as potential candidates begin to consolidate support well ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
With internal party dynamics likely to shape the race, Obasa’s backing could play a crucial role in strengthening Hamzat’s position within the APC.
