Lagos lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency I, Desmond Elliot, has said he was confused and misled into supporting the removal of former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, claiming many lawmakers initially believed the move had backing from the presidency.
Speaking in a television interview, Elliot said the impeachment process came as a surprise while the House was on recess, adding that he was outside the country at the time and only learned of the development after other lawmakers had already signed the impeachment document.
According to him, the situation created widespread confusion among legislators, many of whom assumed the process had approval from higher political authorities.

He said he eventually appended his signature after returning to the country and seeing that several colleagues had already done so. However, Elliot added that the situation was later clarified after President Bola Tinubu reportedly intervened and denied involvement in the removal process.
Elliot stated that lawmakers were subsequently directed to reverse the decision and reinstate the speaker following clarification from the presidency.

The lawmaker also referenced his earlier apology to former House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, linking it to the controversy surrounding the impeachment episode.
His comments add to ongoing political discussions around the internal dynamics of the Lagos State legislature and the events that led to Obasa’s temporary removal and reinstatement.
