Manchester United boosted their chances of securing UEFA Champions League qualification with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
A decisive first-half strike from Matheus Cunha proved enough to separate both sides in a tense encounter, handing United all three points despite a depleted squad.
Manager Michael Carrick was forced to navigate the match without key defenders Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez, who were suspended, while injuries ruled out other options. Still, United held firm to secure a crucial win at a pivotal stage of the season.
The breakthrough came late in the first half when Bruno Fernandes set up Cunha for the only goal of the game, taking his assist tally for the season to 18.
Chelsea pushed for an equaliser after the break and came agonisingly close on two occasions. Headers from Liam Delap and Wesley Fofana both struck the crossbar after beating goalkeeper Senne Lammens, but the hosts were unable to find a way through.

The result lifts United to 58 points in third place, opening a six-point gap over fifth-placed Liverpool FC as the race for Champions League spots intensifies.

For Chelsea, the defeat compounds a difficult run of form. The Blues have now lost six of their last seven matches across all competitions and remain sixth on the table with 48 points, level with Brentford FC and AFC Bournemouth.
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior admitted disappointment after the match, noting his side had opportunities to win but failed to convert them.
Carrick, meanwhile, described the victory as “massive,” underlining its significance in United’s push to return to Europe’s top competition next season.
