Bruno Fernandes made Premier League history on Sunday after breaking the English Premier League assist record in a single season during Manchester United F.C.’s 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. at the AMEX Stadium.
The Portuguese midfielder provided the assist for Patrick Dorgu’s opening goal to register his 21st assist of the campaign, surpassing the previous joint record of 20 held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Fernandes officially claimed sole ownership of the record in the 30th minute when his corner-kick delivery found defender Patrick Dorgu, who converted to give Manchester United the lead.
The milestone capped an outstanding individual season for Fernandes, who was recently named the Premier League Player of the Season and Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year.
The 31-year-old later crowned his performance by scoring Manchester United’s third goal to seal victory and end the season on a winning note for coach Michael Carrick.
Statistics from the season show that Fernandes recorded 14 of his 21 assists under Carrick, while 10 of those assists came from set-piece situations.
Elsewhere, West Ham United F.C. suffered relegation from the Premier League despite recording a convincing 3-0 win over Leeds United F.C. at the London Stadium.
The result was not enough to save the Hammers, who took the final relegation spot and will join Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. and Burnley F.C. in the Championship next season.
