West Ham United joint-chairman David Sullivan has stepped down from his role with immediate effect, saying he wants to focus on defending himself against what he described as false allegations concerning his private life.

The 77-year-old announced his resignation on Saturday, ending a 16-year spell at the helm of the London club.

Sullivan Says Resignation Is Linked to False Allegations

In a statement, Sullivan said he recently became aware of plans to publish and broadcast allegations about his personal life, which he strongly denied.

“I have recently become aware that factually incorrect and entirely false, decades-old allegations concerning my personal life are due to be broadcast and published,” Sullivan said.

He added that the claims had been sensationalised and insisted they were untrue.

“The false allegations levelled against me have been sensationalised by the media. After a lifetime spent building businesses in the adult industry, in which I have met thousands of women, it is sadly inevitable that a small number of improper conduct claims are being made against me. I categorically deny these claims,” he stated.

Sullivan said stepping aside was necessary to avoid distractions for the club.

“This has been an incredibly painful decision to make, but it is one made out of love, respect, and responsibility toward a football club and a fan base that deserve absolute unity and focus moving forward,” he added.

End of a 16-Year Era at West Ham

Sullivan and his late business partner, David Gold, completed their takeover of West Ham after selling Birmingham City, bringing Karren Brady to the club as vice-chair.

During their tenure, the club moved from its historic Upton Park home to the London Stadium in 2016, a decision that divided supporters and sparked several anti-board protests over the years.

Their leadership period also saw West Ham establish themselves in the Premier League and compete in European competitions, although relations with sections of the fanbase were often strained.

Sullivan described himself as a private individual and said those who know him personally understand his character.

“I am a private man, and those who personally and professionally know the real David Sullivan, not the caricature invented by the tabloids, know exactly who I am and what I stand for,” he said.

Club Yet to Announce New Board Structure

West Ham acknowledged Sullivan’s departure and said further details regarding the club’s leadership structure would be announced later.

“The club will provide an update on the future structure of the board of directors in due course, but will make no further comment at this time,” West Ham said in a statement.

Attention is now expected to turn to Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky, who acquired a 27 per cent stake in the club in 2021 and has been linked with increasing his shareholding.

Sullivan’s resignation marks a significant change in the club’s leadership as West Ham prepares for a new chapter both on and off the pitch.
