AC Milan have sacked head coach Massimiliano Allegri following a disappointing end to the Serie A season that saw the club miss out on qualification for the UEFA Champions League for the second consecutive year.
The decision came after Milan suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cagliari Calcio on the final day of the season, a result that saw the Rossoneri drop from third to fifth place in the league standings.
In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, club owners RedBird Capital Partners described the season as an “unequivocal failure” despite Milan spending much of the campaign among the top teams in Serie A.
According to the owners, the club had maintained a credible challenge for the Scudetto for most of the season before suffering a dramatic collapse in form during the closing weeks of the campaign.
They stated that the team’s performances in the final stretch were completely inconsistent with the standards shown earlier in the season, prompting the need for major structural changes within the club.
The fallout from the disappointing campaign extends beyond Allegri’s dismissal, with several senior club officials also departing as part of a wider reorganisation of football operations.
Milan confirmed that chief executive Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada will all leave their positions.
The club said the restructuring is aimed at rebuilding the football department and restoring Milan’s competitiveness both domestically and in Europe.
The statement added that it was now “time for change” following a season that failed to meet expectations despite the club’s early promise.
Allegri’s dismissal brings an end to his second spell in charge of AC Milan after returning to the club last year.
The Italian manager previously coached Milan between 2010 and 2014, guiding the club to the Serie A title during the 2010-11 season before also winning the Italian Super Cup the following year.
However, his return failed to produce the expected revival as Milan struggled with inconsistency during the latter stages of the campaign.
The club are now expected to begin the search for a new head coach as preparations begin for next season without Champions League football.
