The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered the deployment of additional resources to strengthen rescue efforts following the abduction of pupils and school staff in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The police chief visited the affected community on Saturday after the attack, which left residents in shock and triggered a large-scale search operation across surrounding forests and border areas.

According to police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Inspector-General expressed deep concern over the incident and extended condolences to families affected by the attack.

He described the assault on the schools as cruel and unacceptable, assuring residents that security agencies would do everything possible to rescue the victims and bring the attackers to justice.

During the visit, the IGP was briefed by senior police commanders, including the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, on ongoing operations and current security deployments in the area.

The Kwara State Police Command also participated in the briefing, as authorities expanded coordination across state borders to prevent the suspects from escaping through nearby forest routes.

The Inspector-General directed that additional tactical teams, intelligence officers and specialised units be deployed immediately to strengthen the ongoing search and rescue mission.

He also instructed officers to intensify intelligence gathering and maintain pressure on the kidnappers believed to be hiding within a national park axis linking Oyo and Kwara states.

Security forces are currently focusing operations on forested areas where intelligence suggests the suspects may still be located.

Earlier reports indicated that armed men invaded two communities in Oriire, killing a teacher and a motorcyclist before abducting pupils and several school staff members, including principals and teachers.

In an earlier update, the Oyo State Government said the suspected kidnappers had been confined within the national park area as security operatives intensified their search efforts.

Authorities have continued to appeal for calm, assuring residents that every available resource is being deployed to ensure the safe return of the victims.

The police say the operation remains active, with coordinated land and forest patrols ongoing across the affected communities and neighbouring regions.
