The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has directed the commission’s operatives to issue a formal apology to Professor Eyo Ekpe, a cardiothoracic surgeon at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), following a controversial raid on the facility.
The directive was issued after the EFCC reviewed a preliminary report on the May 12 incident involving its personnel and medical staff at the teaching hospital.
In a statement on Monday, the commission said Olukoyede expressed regret over the disruption and discomfort caused to hospital staff and members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
He specifically ordered that an apology be tendered to Professor Ekpe, who also serves as Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at UUTH, as well as to the NMA.

The EFCC chairman acknowledged concerns raised over the operation and stressed that the welfare of Nigerians remains central to the agency’s mandate.
He also assured that a full investigation would be conducted into the incident, adding that officers found culpable would face disciplinary action.
Olukoyede further stated that the commission remains committed to collaborating with professional bodies to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
However, he reaffirmed that the EFCC will continue to carry out its anti-corruption operations across the country without hesitation.
He also appealed to the NMA and other stakeholders in the medical sector to continue supporting the commission’s mandate.
