Obafemi Hamzat has been cleared by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to participate in the party’s governorship primaries for the 2027 Lagos State election, marking a significant step in his bid to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The Lagos State deputy governor disclosed the development on Saturday in a post on X after appearing before the APC’s 11-member governorship screening committee in Abuja.
The committee, chaired by Benjamin Nwoye, gave Hamzat what he described as a “clean bill of approval,” allowing him to advance to the next stage of the party’s internal selection process.
Describing the screening exercise as transparent, deliberate and well organised, Hamzat expressed gratitude to the party and reaffirmed his commitment to building on the achievements of the current administration.

“Today in Abuja, I appeared before the APC governorship screening committee ahead of our party primaries. I am grateful for the clean bill of approval to move forward,” he wrote.
According to him, his governorship ambition is rooted in service, continuity and a vision for a more inclusive Lagos.
“This journey is about service and commitment to all Lagosians. We have built a solid foundation, and now we are ready to take the next step toward a greater and more inclusive Lagos,” he said.
“The work continues, and I am ready to keep moving forward with you.”
The APC began the sale of its expression of interest and nomination forms on April 28, with aspirants undergoing screening between May 6 and May 9.

The party’s governorship primary election is scheduled to take place on May 21, when party delegates are expected to choose the APC’s flagbearer for the 2027 Lagos governorship contest.
Hamzat, a former commissioner and long-time technocrat in Lagos politics, is widely regarded as one of the most prominent contenders within the ruling party and has played a central role in the administration’s infrastructure and policy initiatives over the past several years.
