The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, has resigned from his position and formally defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, announced Chinda’s resignation and defection during plenary on Tuesday as lawmakers resumed legislative activities following a four-week recess.
According to details contained in Chinda’s resignation letter, the Rivers lawmaker stepped down as minority leader with effect from April 23, 2026.
In the letter addressed to the Speaker, Chinda thanked members of the House and the minority caucus for the opportunity to serve in the leadership position.
“It has been a profound honour and privilege to serve in this capacity, representing the collective interest of the minority caucus and contributing to the legislative work of the House,” he stated.
The lawmaker also pledged to continue serving his constituents and supporting legislative activities despite relinquishing his leadership role.
Notably, Chinda was absent from the chamber when the Speaker formally announced his resignation and defection.

The announcement brings to an end weeks of speculation surrounding Chinda’s political future after he participated in the APC governorship primary in Rivers State without publicly declaring his resignation from the PDP or stepping down as minority leader.
His involvement in the APC primary had generated debate within political and legislative circles, with critics questioning whether he could continue occupying a principal opposition leadership position after aligning with the ruling party.
Before the House proceeded on recess, House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, had maintained that Chinda duly notified the House leadership of his resignation.
Rotimi argued that while lawmakers often announce defections on the floor of the House, there is no constitutional or parliamentary provision making such announcements mandatory.
Chinda’s exit represents one of the most notable political realignments in the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general election.
As minority leader, he served as one of the most prominent opposition figures in the National Assembly and played a key role in coordinating the activities of opposition lawmakers.
His defection also adds to a growing list of political figures from Rivers State who have recently aligned with the APC amid ongoing political realignments in the state.
With Chinda’s resignation now formally acknowledged by the House, attention is expected to shift to the PDP caucus as consultations begin to nominate a replacement for the minority leadership position.
The development leaves a vacancy in one of the principal offices of the House and is likely to trigger discussions among opposition lawmakers on the future direction of the caucus ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political observers say the emergence of a new minority leader will be closely watched as opposition parties seek to reorganise and strengthen their presence in the National Assembly in the run-up to the next general election.
