British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has downplayed the significance of finally agreeing to a long-awaited showdown with rival Tyson Fury, insisting that true satisfaction will only come if he emerges victorious.
Joshua made the remarks on Monday as preparations continue for a potential “Battle of Britain” clash against Fury later this year.
Speaking about the agreement for a future bout with Fury, Joshua said signing a contract alone does not represent success.
“I’m not pleased because the pleasure really comes after victory,” Joshua said.
“Signing a contract doesn’t mean anything. Winning is the only true success.”
The anticipated heavyweight clash, which could take place in November, is expected to be one of the biggest fights in British boxing history.

Before any meeting with Fury, both fighters are expected to take part in separate tune-up bouts.
Joshua is scheduled to face Albanian boxer Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia on July 25. The fight will mark his first appearance since a car accident in Nigeria in December 2025 that reportedly claimed the lives of two of his close friends.
Meanwhile, Fury recently shared footage of himself training in Thailand, accompanied by a message suggesting a return to action on August 1 in Dublin, Ireland.
Veteran promoter Frank Warren is reportedly organising a boxing card in the Irish capital, although Fury’s opponent has yet to be confirmed.
Joshua said he remains fully focused on the immediate challenge against Prenga while keeping his long-term objectives in sight.
The former world champion described boxing as his profession and said having a clear schedule provides purpose and motivation.
“What does boxing give me? It gives me an opportunity to work. I’m a contractor, this is a contract, this is my job so I’ve got an opportunity to work,” he said.
Joshua added that his roadmap includes defeating Prenga, facing Fury and eventually competing for another world title.
“I’ve got a clear goal, I know what this year is about, I know how tough this year is going to be. I’ve been training hard, that’s my life.”
The proposed Joshua-Fury contest comes as both fighters attempt to re-establish themselves among boxing’s elite heavyweights.
Fury has not fought since his recent setbacks at world level, while Joshua has not recorded a major victory against a top-tier opponent since before his knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois in September 2024.
A successful return for both men would set the stage for one of the most anticipated heavyweight contests of recent years.
After years of speculation and failed negotiations, the prospect of Joshua and Fury finally sharing the ring appears closer than ever.
However, Joshua has made it clear that the agreement itself is not enough. For the former unified heavyweight champion, the real achievement will only come when the fight is won and his hand is raised in victory.
