The Lagos State Government says the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line transported about 3.5 million passengers in 2025, with daily ridership rising to around 15,000 commuters as more residents embrace rail transportation.
Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi disclosed this during the 2026 ministerial press briefing marking the third year of the second term of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to Osiyemi, the number of daily trips on the Blue Line increased from 57 to 72 and now stands at 90 trips per day, reflecting growing public confidence in the rail system.
The state government said it has continued to strengthen operations by deploying additional coaches and advancing work on Phase II of the project, which will extend the line from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.
Construction activities currently underway include track laying, station development, installation of power systems and other supporting infrastructure. Major structures such as the Mazamaza and LASU bridges have been completed, while work continues at stations in Festac, LASU and Volkswagen.

The commissioner also said the government is expanding the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line to improve connectivity and reduce travel times across the state. The first phase of the 37-kilometre corridor runs from Agbado to Oyingbo and shares tracks with the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
To boost operations on the Red Line, Lagos recently received a new set of 24-car trains expected to increase passenger capacity and reduce waiting times.
The Blue Line, Lagos’ first intra-city rail system, began commercial operations in September 2023 along the Marina–Mile 2 corridor. The initial 13-kilometre phase has steadily grown in popularity, carrying more than 583,000 passengers within its first four months and surpassing two million passengers by September 2024.

Osiyemi said the progress reflects the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to building an integrated, safe, affordable and efficient transport network under its THEMES+ Agenda, with continued investments planned across road, rail and water transportation systems.
