Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has thrown his weight behind the governorship ambition of Obafemi Hamzat, signalling early political alignment ahead of the 2027 race in Lagos State.
The endorsement came during a visit by Hamzat and a group of party stakeholders, part of a broader round of consultations as the deputy governor begins to consolidate support within the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Gbajabiamila described Hamzat as a tested administrator with the experience and capacity required to lead the state, pointing to his performance in government over the years. According to him, continuity will be key to sustaining Lagos’ development trajectory, and the party must rally behind candidates capable of delivering results.
He emphasised that the 2027 election would be competitive, warning that opposition forces are already positioning themselves to challenge the ruling party’s dominance. To counter that, he said, unity within the party and a strong candidate would be critical.
The Chief of Staff also noted that leadership in Lagos demands both political experience and the ability to manage a complex, fast-growing state. In his view, Hamzat’s track record places him in a strong position to meet those expectations.

Hamzat, in response, said his visit was aimed at seeking guidance and building consensus among party leaders, stressing the importance of maintaining public trust in the APC’s leadership in Lagos.
He framed his ambition as part of a broader effort to continue existing policies and expand on them, rather than introduce abrupt shifts. According to him, Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s economic hub makes stability and continuity essential.
The deputy governor also hinted at the political stakes involved, suggesting that well-funded opposition interests could pose a serious challenge if the ruling party fails to stay cohesive.
Other political figures present at the meeting, including former minister Musiliu Obanikoro, echoed support for Hamzat, describing him as a steady and capable leader.
The endorsement marks one of the earliest public signals of alignment within the APC as conversations around the 2027 governorship race begin to take shape. While the contest remains some distance away, internal positioning and alliances are already forming, setting the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched political battle.
For now, Hamzat’s camp appears focused on building momentum quietly, one meeting, one endorsement at a time, as the party begins to map out its future leadership in Lagos.
