At least 16 people have died in a tragic road accident along the Okene–Osara–Lokoja highway in Kogi State, after an 18-seater passenger bus reportedly lost control and plunged off a bridge in the early hours of Friday.
The crash occurred in Osara, Adavi Local Government Area, where the bus veered off the bridge and fell to the ground below, leaving multiple passengers trapped and critically injured.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kogi State, Lawal Fagge, confirmed the incident during a telephone interview, saying emergency responders were immediately deployed to the scene after the crash was reported.
According to him, FRSC rescue teams from the Zariagi Unit carried out evacuation operations, recovered the victims, and cleared the wreckage to restore movement along the highway.
Fagge disclosed that only two passengers survived the crash but sustained severe injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, where they are currently being treated.

He attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speeding, warning that such reckless driving continues to be a major contributor to fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.
The remains of the deceased have since been deposited at a morgue in Lokoja, while authorities say further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The crash has once again renewed concerns over road safety in the country, particularly on long-distance highways, with the FRSC urging motorists to observe speed limits and exercise caution, especially during night and early morning travel.
Officials also reiterated calls for stricter compliance with traffic regulations, noting that preventable human errors remain responsible for a significant number of fatal accidents recorded nationwide.
