Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has expressed confidence that he can secure the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election, while questioning the electoral strength of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Amaechi made the remarks during an interview on Trust TV on Monday night, where he argued that Atiku’s repeated successes in party primaries had not translated into victory at the general elections.
According to him, while the former vice president has consistently won nominations, he has failed to convert them into electoral success at the presidential level.
He added that Atiku’s record raises questions about electability, insisting that winning primaries alone does not guarantee success at the polls.
Amaechi also positioned himself as a fresh alternative in the race, noting that he has never previously contested a presidential election, which he believes could work in his favour.

Despite his criticism, the former minister praised both Atiku and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying either of them would perform better than President Bola Tinubu if allowed to govern Nigeria.
He, however, accused President Tinubu of ethnic bias in governance, contrasting him with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he described as a nationalist.
Amaechi further reiterated his support for zoning as a political principle, while stressing that every region must feel included in the country’s political structure.
He also highlighted insecurity and regional marginalisation, particularly in the South-East, warning that Nigeria’s unity depends on fairness and inclusion.
His comments come as the ADC prepares for its presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026, with other contenders including Atiku Abubakar and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
