A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) loyal to Dumebi Kachikwu has dissolved the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and declared him its presidential candidate during a national convention and presidential primary held in Abuja on Sunday.
Kachikwu emerged as the faction’s presidential flag bearer through a voice vote by delegates at the convention, while party members also announced the immediate replacement of the dissolved NWC with a newly constituted leadership structure.
During the convention, the faction unveiled a new set of national officers expected to oversee the party’s affairs moving forward.
The newly announced officials include Kingsley Oggah as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Abdulkadir Bashir as National Chairman, Johnny Derek as National Secretary, and Kennedy O. Odion as National Treasurer.
Others named into the new leadership structure include Chief Amirigoye as National Financial Secretary and Chris Ugwu as National Legal Adviser, alongside a newly appointed National Publicity Secretary.
The faction said the restructuring became necessary to reposition the party ahead of future elections and address lingering internal disputes.
Speaking after receiving the party’s flag, Kachikwu said Nigeria is currently facing a critical moment that requires decisive leadership capable of tackling insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and growing national divisions.
According to him, the increasing migration of Nigerians abroad reflects widespread frustration among citizens, particularly the middle class.
“The mass exodus of the middle class is indicative of those who have chosen not to be part of the hardship anymore,” he stated.
Kachikwu also pledged to provide leadership focused on national unity, economic recovery, and institutional reforms if elected president.
Earlier at the convention, the Chairman of ADC State Chairmen, Kingsley Oggah, described the gathering as a defining moment for the party despite its internal challenges.
He said the convention demonstrated the party’s resilience and determination to remain politically relevant.
Meanwhile, the newly elected National Chairman, Abdulkadir Bashir, urged party members to respect the ADC constitution and avoid actions capable of worsening internal divisions.
“No individual is bigger than the party,” Bashir said, while calling on members to unite ahead of future electoral contests.
The latest development is expected to deepen existing tensions within the ADC, which has witnessed internal disagreements among various factions in recent months.
Political observers say the emergence of parallel structures within the party could trigger further legal and political disputes ahead of the next general election cycle.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official reaction from other factions within the party regarding the Abuja convention and leadership changes announced by the Kachikwu camp.
