YouTube is rolling out new podcast-focused features for Premium users, including an AI-powered recommendation tool, an “Auto speed” playback option, and a redesigned on-the-go listening mode aimed at improving how users consume long-form audio content.
The update highlights the platform’s growing push to compete more directly with dedicated podcast platforms such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts, as well as newer entrants expanding into video podcasts. It also comes as Netflix increases its investment in podcast-style content, intensifying competition across the audio and video streaming space.
The Google-owned platform says the new tools are designed to improve discovery and listening convenience, particularly for users who consume podcasts during multitasking activities like commuting or exercising.

At the centre of the update is an AI-driven recommendation system that suggests podcasts based on user interests, listening history, genres, moods, or previously enjoyed shows.
This builds on YouTube’s existing personalization features, such as “Ask Music,” which already helps Premium users generate tailored playlists and radio stations.
Alongside this, the platform is introducing an “Auto speed” feature that automatically adjusts playback speed depending on speech patterns within a podcast episode. The aim is to maintain smooth comprehension even when the speaking pace varies between hosts or segments.

Unlike traditional speed controls, which remain fixed throughout playback, the new system dynamically adjusts in real time to improve listening efficiency without distorting content.
YouTube is also launching a new on-the-go listening mode designed for users who consume podcasts while multitasking.
The feature introduces simplified controls for skipping, rewinding, or jumping between episodes, making it easier to navigate content during activities like running, commuting, or working.
According to YouTube, Premium users listened to more than 800 million hours of podcast content in April 2026 alone, while the platform’s podcast ecosystem now reportedly reaches over 1 billion monthly active users.

The new features are currently available on Android for Premium subscribers, with an iOS rollout expected in the coming months as YouTube continues to expand its footprint in the fast-growing podcast market.
