The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has clarified that the institution remains on the three-week mid-semester break approved by the university Senate and urged students and members of the public to disregard any contrary information circulating online.
In a statement issued on Friday, the university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olanrewaju, described a purported resumption notice as fake, malicious and deliberately designed to mislead students, create unnecessary tension and tarnish the image of the institution.
According to him, the letter did not originate from the Office of the Registrar or any authorised organ of the university, despite claims suggesting otherwise.
“The attention of the management of Obafemi Awolowo University has been drawn to the circulation of a fake letter purportedly issued and signed by the Registrar of the University in respect of the ongoing three-week mid-semester break approved by the University Senate,” the statement said.
“The said letter did not emanate from the Office of the Registrar or any authorised organ of the University. The signature appended thereto is fake, forged and criminally fabricated.”
The university called on students, parents, guardians, alumni and staff to ignore the document, stressing that all official announcements would be communicated only through recognised and verified university channels.

Olanrewaju advised students and the wider public to remain cautious and avoid spreading false information.

OAU had announced the mid-semester break on April 28 following protests by students over a newly introduced transportation policy and concerns about accommodation arrangements in the university.
The protests were triggered by demands for more vehicles to serve students across campus, as well as opposition to a renovation plan that would require some residents of Blocks 7 and 8 of Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence to vacate their rooms temporarily.
The university Senate said the three-week break was approved to restore order, ensure the safety of students and staff, and create room for constructive dialogue over the issues raised.
