Nollywood Actor Damilola Ogunsi Advocates for Regulation of Social Media to Curb Misinformation

Nigerian actor Damilola Ogunsi has publicly supported the proposed social media regulation bill, citing concerns over the unchecked spread of misinformation online. In a recent discussion on News Central TV, Ogunsi emphasized how social media has negatively influenced society, with bloggers and influencers disseminating false narratives that shape public perception.

According to him, “Many people are adopting social media lingo in real-life conversations, basing their beliefs and understanding of issues on misleading online content. We have too many bloggers spreading misinformation without consequences, and this is affecting society.”

Ogunsi referenced countries such as Turkey and the UAE, where social media regulations help maintain order and accountability. He suggested that Nigeria should adopt a similar approach to ensure that digital platforms are not misused for spreading harmful content.

While recognizing the importance of free speech, Ogunsi insisted that proper regulations would prevent the uncontrolled spread of falsehoods and the rise of online toxicity. He criticized the current system where bloggers post damaging stories without fear of repercussions, urging the government to introduce legal measures to hold them accountable.

His stance has reignited the debate on the balance between digital freedom and responsible media use, with many agreeing that misinformation remains a growing problem in Nigeria’s online space.
