LAGOS, Nigeria — Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has paid an emotional tribute to the late actor Alexx Ekubo, describing him as “a man of honour” who left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.
Ekubo died on May 11 at the age of 40 following a prolonged battle with stage 4 kidney cancer. He was laid to rest last week at his grandfather’s compound in Abia State.
In a video shared on Instagram after the burial, Edochie reflected on three memorable encounters he had with the late actor, recalling Ekubo’s generosity, humility and respect.
Quoting William Shakespeare, the veteran actor said, “All the world is a stage, and all the men and women are the players. They have their exits, they have their entrances.”
“Finally, my son, Alexx Ekubo, has been laid to rest. May the good Lord accept his gentle soul and grant him eternal rest,” he added.
Edochie recounted that their first meeting occurred when Ekubo visited him at a hotel with a cow and a group of traditional drummers to personally invite him to the premiere of a film he co-produced with fellow actor Stan Nze.
According to Edochie, he was welcomed to the event in grand style, escorted onto the red carpet by masquerades in what he described as one of the most memorable receptions he had ever received.
“I met Alexx three times. On the first occasion, he came with a cow and a set of organic drummers to my hotel to invite me to the premiere of a film he had done with his friend Stan Nze,” Edochie said.
“I got there and I was ushered into the arena onto the red carpet by masquerades. It was the biggest welcome I had received in Lagos. I am never, ever likely to forget it.”
The veteran actor said their second meeting was equally memorable, as Ekubo visited him at another hotel with his siblings after preparing an elaborate meal in his honour.
During their final meeting, Edochie recalled that the late actor presented him with fruits and a kolanut placed on a saucer alongside ₦100,000, requesting prayers for his life and future.
“On the third occasion, he came to visit me in another hotel. He brought me fruits. Then he put one kolanut in a saucer, wedged the kola with a hundred thousand, and requested I pray for him,” he said.
Edochie also revealed that he later learnt Ekubo had been making plans to organise a grand celebration for his upcoming 80th birthday next year.
“I was told he was planning big for my 80th birthday, which, by the grace of God, will be next year. It is gone now,” he said.
Describing Ekubo as a man of integrity, Edochie also commended actor Ikechukwu “IK” Ogbonna for standing by his late friend until the end.
“Alexx was a man of honour. I want to specially thank Ike IK Ogbonna. He proved himself a friend both in life and in death,” he said.
“I want to use this occasion to console the family of Alexx Ekubo. Alexx came, he saw, and he left an indelible impression.”
Earlier on Thursday, David Ekubo, speaking on behalf of the family, expressed concerns over the circumstances surrounding the actor’s death and burial, alleging that relatives were not adequately informed about key details regarding his passing.
