VANCOUVER, CANADA — Mohamed Salah expressed his delight after inspiring Egypt to their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory, helping the Pharaohs come from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver.

The Liverpool forward scored one goal and provided an assist as Egypt recovered from an early setback at BC Place to secure a landmark win and move to the top of Group G with four points.

Despite entering the match as favourites, Egypt found themselves trailing in the 15th minute when New Zealand defender Finn Surman headed home from a Tim Payne corner. The goal stunned the Egyptian supporters and gave the All Whites an early advantage.

New Zealand, who had previously drawn 2-2 with Iran, defended resolutely throughout much of the first half as Egypt struggled to break through.

However, the momentum shifted after the break as Egypt began to dominate possession and create more chances.

The equaliser arrived in the 58th minute when Mostafa Ziko connected with Mohamed Hany’s cross and headed the ball into the net. Egypt continued to press forward and completed the turnaround nine minutes later.

Ziko combined with Salah in a slick one-two move before the Egypt captain unleashed a powerful left-footed strike past the goalkeeper to put his side ahead.

Mahmoud Trezeguet sealed the victory in the 82nd minute, heading home from a Salah corner to complete a memorable comeback.

The result marked Egypt’s first-ever World Cup win and significantly boosted their chances of progressing to the knockout stages.

Speaking after the match in Vancouver, Salah praised the team’s achievement and the atmosphere created by Egyptian supporters.

“It’s a great achievement for all the players. It’s a great win. It’s a great vibe. The next game is very important,” Salah told reporters.
