KANSAS CITY — Lionel Messi scored a stunning hat-trick on Tuesday to become the joint-highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history as defending champions Argentina opened their campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Algeria.
The 38-year-old delivered a masterclass at the 69,045-capacity Arrowhead Stadium, netting all three goals as Argentina cruised to victory in their Group J opener and began their bid for a second consecutive world title in emphatic fashion.
The match also marked a historic milestone for Messi, who became the first player to feature in six FIFA World Cups. The Argentina captain made his 200th international appearance as he led his side onto the pitch for another landmark moment in an extraordinary career.
Messi opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a curling effort that moved him to 14 World Cup goals, drawing level with German legend Gerd Muller and France forward Kylian Mbappe on the tournament’s all-time scoring chart.
He struck again in the 60th minute, reacting quickest to convert a rebound after an Alexis Mac Allister effort, taking his tally to 15 World Cup goals and moving ahead of Muller and Mbappe to join Brazilian great Ronaldo.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute with a composed low finish from the edge of the penalty area, drawing level with Germany’s Miroslav Klose on 16 World Cup goals to become the tournament’s joint all-time leading scorer.
Messi received a standing ovation from supporters when he was substituted four minutes later, bringing an end to a memorable night that further cemented his place among football’s greatest players.
Argentina controlled proceedings throughout the contest, dominating possession and creating the better chances against an Algeria side that struggled to cope with the South Americans’ attacking quality.
The victory gives Argentina an ideal start to their World Cup title defence and reinforces their status as one of the favourites to lift the trophy once again.
For Messi, meanwhile, the night added another remarkable chapter to a career already filled with records, milestones and historic achievements on football’s biggest stage.
