Hamma Baba-Ahmed, a prominent Nigerian politician and former vice-presidential candidate, has publicly stated that Nigeria’s socio-economic and security conditions have worsened since the end of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in May 2023.

In a detailed critique, Baba-Ahmed argued that the current government has failed to address critical challenges inherited from Buhari’s eight-year tenure, including rising inflation, unemployment, and insecurity. He pointed to the escalating cost of living, with food prices soaring beyond the reach of many households, as evidence of policy failures that have deepened poverty across the country.

Baba-Ahmed highlighted the persistent activities of armed groups, particularly in northern Nigeria, where banditry and kidnappings have disrupted communities and agriculture. He also criticized the handling of the naira’s exchange rate, which has depreciated significantly, contributing to economic instability.

According to Baba-Ahmed, the removal of fuel subsidies, while intended to free up resources for development, has disproportionately harmed low-income Nigerians without adequate compensatory measures. He argued that the promised benefits of subsidy removal, such as improved infrastructure and social services, have yet to materialize, leaving citizens grappling with higher transportation and energy costs.

While acknowledging that Buhari’s administration faced its own criticisms, including accusations of nepotism and economic mismanagement, Baba-Ahmed asserted that the current leadership has not demonstrated the political will to reverse these trends. He called for urgent reforms, including targeted interventions to boost agricultural productivity, strengthen security forces, and enhance transparency in governance.

Baba-Ahmed’s remarks have sparked debates about Nigeria’s trajectory, with some analysts agreeing that systemic issues require bold action, while others argue that the current administration needs more time to implement its policies. The statement underscores the growing frustration among Nigerians as they navigate economic hardships and uncertainty.
