The Federal Government and National Assembly have endorsed the West African Examinations Council’s initiative to introduce computer-based testing for its exams starting in 2026.

Nigeria’s Federal Government and National Assembly announced their support for the West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) plan to transition to computer-based testing (CBT) for its examinations beginning in 2026. The decision, aimed at modernizing the examination process, was praised by Education Minister Tunji Alausa during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja. WAEC’s Head of National Office, Amos Dangut, outlined the CBT framework, which seeks to enhance efficiency, reduce malpractices, and align with global educational standards, as reported by local media.

The initiative, set to cover the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), follows successful CBT trials for private candidates. The National Assembly’s Education Committee, led by Senator Adeyemi Adaramodu, committed to providing legislative backing to ensure adequate funding and infrastructure, including digital centers in rural areas. The move aligns with Nigeria’s push for technological advancement in education, addressing concerns about accessibility raised in stakeholder discussions. X posts reflect public optimism about reduced exam fraud, though some highlight infrastructure challenges.

The endorsement has sparked debate, with supporters praising the modernization effort, while others worry about digital disparities in underserved regions. The plan tests Nigeria’s ability to bridge technological gaps and WAEC’s capacity to implement CBT across West Africa. As preparations advance, the initiative could transform education, positioning Nigeria as a leader in regional examination reforms.
