The Social Democratic Party is facing internal turmoil as its former national chairman, Shehu Gabam, was on Tuesday remanded by an FCT Chief Magistrates Court over alleged criminal misappropriation of party funds.

Gabam was arraigned alongside Chukwuma Ogbonna and Uchechukwu in a case filed under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, following a direct criminal complaint brought by the current SDP leadership.

The court admitted the former chairman to ₦3 million bail with two sureties, each required to have landed property within Abuja. It also ordered him to submit his international passport pending the conclusion of the case.

The magistrate adjourned the matter until May 25 for further hearing.

During proceedings, counsel for the complainant requested time to respond to the bail application filed by the defendants.

Speaking after the court session, SDP National Chairman Sadiq Abubakar said the party was forced to approach the court after several petitions allegedly failed to prompt action from relevant authorities.

He claimed that financial records submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission suggested discrepancies in party funds management.

According to him, an audit report indicated that the party generated about ₦32 million within a review period, while nearly ₦31 million was allegedly mismanaged.

Abubakar further alleged that later discoveries of bank documents pointed to transactions worth about ₦740 million, raising concerns about transparency within the party.

He said petitions had been submitted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the Nigeria Police Force, and the State Security Service, but claimed no decisive action was taken, leading to direct court action.

The SDP leadership said the legal process was necessary to restore accountability, transparency, and discipline within the party following earlier suspensions and expulsions linked to alleged financial misconduct.
