Afrobeats star Davido has pledged support for the expansion of music infrastructure at Babcock University, saying the creative industry has become one of the most important economic drivers in Nigeria.

Davido made the commitment during a visit to the university in Ogun State over the weekend, where he said he plans to help develop modern music facilities, including standard recording studios for students.

The singer, who graduated from the institution about 11 years ago, said returning to campus brought back memories of his early life and the role the school played in shaping his discipline and career.

He described music and creativity as a major source of economic value, noting that young talents need better infrastructure to grow and compete globally.

Davido said he is ready to give back to his alma mater by supporting the development of a stronger music department that can train students with industry-level facilities.

According to him, the creative sector should be treated as a serious economic pillar, not just entertainment.

He also reflected on how he balanced fame and education during his time as a student, explaining that he still had to attend classes despite his rising success in the music industry.

Davido said discipline and education helped him stay focused even when his career was demanding and fast-growing.

He encouraged students to believe in themselves and remain committed to their chosen paths, whether in music, journalism, engineering or other fields.

During the visit, the Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Prof. Afolarin Olutunde Ojewole, praised Davido’s achievements and said the institution plans to establish a music school named after him.

The university leadership said the artist has contributed significantly to the growth of the institution through support for scholarships, infrastructure and the music programme.

The Vice Chancellor added that Davido’s influence helped strengthen the school’s music department and that the university is proud of his global success.

He also said the institution hopes to collaborate with the singer to upgrade its music facilities into a world-class centre that reflects his international impact.

Students and staff welcomed Davido during his visit, with many gathering around him on campus as he toured the school.

The proposed upgrade is expected to deepen the link between the entertainment industry and higher education while supporting talent development in Nigeria’s growing creative economy.
