Adeboye Urges Tinubu to Give Security Chiefs 90-Day Ultimatum

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye, has urged President Bola Tinubu to give Nigeria’s security chiefs a 90-day deadline to eliminate terrorists across the country or resign from their positions.

Adeboye made the call in a video shared on the church’s X handle on Tuesday, expressing concern over the persistent insecurity in parts of the country and urging the Federal Government to take decisive action against terrorists and their sponsors.

Adeboye Calls for Tougher Action

The cleric said the government must move swiftly to address the security crisis, stressing that security chiefs should be held accountable for results.

“If I were asked to make suggestions, I would say quietly to our government, move fast. And tell our security chiefs, get rid of these terrorists within 90 days, or resign,” Adeboye said.

He noted that religious leaders can only offer advice, while the responsibility for implementing security measures rests with the Commander-in-Chief.

According to him, any directive issued to security agencies should not only focus on eliminating terrorists but also target those financing and supporting criminal activities.

“When giving orders to the service chiefs this time around, we should make it clear to them that they are not only to eliminate the terrorists, they should eliminate their sponsors, no matter how influential they may be,” he added.

Buhari Issued Similar Directive

Adeboye recalled advising former President Muhammadu Buhari to set a deadline for security chiefs to tackle insecurity, saying the former president acted on the recommendation but failed to enforce it after the deadline expired.

In 2021, Buhari directed security agencies to intensify operations against bandits, kidnappers and other criminal groups, urging the armed forces to adopt a more proactive approach.

According to Adeboye, the directive was not fully implemented despite the timeline given to security chiefs.

“He ran with that advice, but he didn’t follow it through. Because he gave the order as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The three months went, and the work was not done,” he said.

The cleric said he later discussed the matter with the former president but declined to reveal details of their conversation.

Concerns Over Rising Insecurity

Adeboye’s comments come amid renewed concerns over insecurity following a series of kidnappings, attacks on communities and school abductions across the country.

On May 15, gunmen attacked schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State and abducted dozens of pupils and teachers. One of the teachers was later killed while in captivity.

In response to the incident, President Tinubu approved the deployment of a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted victims.

The latest abduction has added to growing calls from religious leaders, civil society groups and other stakeholders for stronger measures to address insecurity and protect lives and property across the country.

Adeboye said decisive action against both terrorists and their sponsors remains critical to restoring security and public confidence in the country.
