US State Department Begins Mass Layoffs

The U.S. State Department has initiated mass layoffs affecting over 1,200 employees, a move announced on July 12, 2025, as part of a cost-cutting initiative under the Trump administration.

The cuts, targeting administrative and diplomatic staff, aim to reduce a $6 billion budget deficit, with 800 positions in consular services and 400 in policy analysis eliminated. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cited efficiency as the goal.

The layoffs, effective August 1, 2025, follow a 2024 audit revealing $2 billion in inefficiencies, but unions argue they undermine global diplomacy, especially in Africa and Asia. Affected employees, with 60 days’ notice, can apply for severance or reassignment, though only 20% qualify.

Critics, including Senator Chris Murphy, warn of weakened security, while supporters claim it streamlines operations. Protests are planned for July 15.
