The National Emergency Management Agency concluded its search and rescue operation in Sokoto State on August 20, 2025, after a boat carrying over 50 passengers capsized in the River Goronyo on August 17.

The agency confirmed the rescue of 25 men and one woman, alongside the recovery of three bodies near Kojiyo, Bari, and Wuci communities in Goronyo Local Government Area. Over 20 passengers remain missing, with strong winds and overloading blamed for the tragedy, which occurred while the boat, also carrying goods and motorcycles, headed to Goronyo Market.

NEMA, working with the National Inland Waterways Authority and Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, deployed divers to recover cargo and search for survivors. The Sokoto government provided relief supplies, including grains, to support victims’ families, as announced by state officials. The incident has raised concerns about waterway safety, with calls for stricter regulations on boat operations. Many in the region rely on such markets for their livelihoods, making the loss deeply felt across communities. The government has pledged to investigate the cause to prevent future mishaps.

The tragedy follows similar incidents in Nigeria’s northern waterways, where overloading and poor maintenance have led to recurring accidents. Community leaders have urged better oversight, noting the reliance on river transport for trade. The Sokoto government’s response includes plans for safety audits, aiming to restore confidence among residents.

The search’s conclusion leaves families awaiting answers, with local authorities vowing continued support. The incident underscores the challenges of ensuring safe transport in Nigeria’s rural areas, prompting national calls for reform as communities mourn.
