Soaring Inflation Sparks Lagos Rental Crisis, Forcing Residents to Relocate

The rising cost of living in Nigeria has taken a heavy toll on Lagos residents, as inflation continues to drive a rental crisis in the country’s commercial hub.

Many tenants are forced to vacate their homes due to skyrocketing rent prices, leading to a surge in relocations to cheaper neighborhoods and even out-of-state migrations.

Property owners in high-demand areas such as Lekki, Ikeja, and Surulere have reportedly increased rent by as much as 50% in the past year, citing inflation, high construction costs, and increased property taxes.

Some affected residents have decried the situation, calling for government intervention to regulate rental prices and introduce policies that provide affordable housing. In response, housing experts have urged the government to expand its affordable housing schemes and review rent control policies.
