Controversial Nigerian Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has praised Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, following reports of his death in a missile strike, describing him as a “lucky soul” who died fighting injustice.
Gumi made the remarks in a Facebook post on Sunday, reacting to the killing of the long-serving Iranian leader. He portrayed Khamenei as a defender of oppressed people, particularly victims of war in Gaza and other conflict zones.
“A lucky soul, he died in Jihad against killers of innocent children and women in Gaza and elsewhere,” Gumi wrote.
He further suggested that the Iranian leader’s death could have far-reaching consequences across the Muslim world, describing it as a turning point.

“His blood will fuel the change in the ummah. He stood firmly for justice and didn’t hide in bunkers. For those who killed him or assisted in killing him, let us see what they will live to do in this world,” he added.
Khamenei was reportedly killed on Saturday after missiles struck his office in Tehran, the capital of Iran. Iranian state media and local outlets later confirmed his death, marking a major turning point in the country’s political and religious leadership.

Authorities declared a 40-day national mourning period in honour of the late leader, who ruled Iran for more than three decades and played a central role in shaping the country’s domestic and foreign policies.
His death comes amid escalating military tensions involving the United States and Israel, which launched coordinated strikes targeting Iranian military and strategic infrastructure.
Following Khamenei’s death, Iranian authorities announced the formation of a temporary leadership structure to guide the country through the transition period.
According to state media, President Masoud Pezeshkian and the head of Iran’s judiciary will oversee a transitional leadership council responsible for maintaining political stability and continuity.
Khamenei, who became Iran’s Supreme Leader in 1989, was one of the most powerful figures in the Middle East. His leadership influenced Iran’s military posture, foreign alliances, and ideological direction for over three decades.
His death has drawn mixed reactions globally, reflecting his polarising influence. Supporters viewed him as a defender of sovereignty and resistance against Western influence, while critics accused him of overseeing policies that intensified regional conflicts.

Gumi’s remarks add to the growing list of reactions from religious and political figures worldwide, highlighting the symbolic significance of Khamenei’s death beyond Iran’s borders.
As Iran enters a mourning period and leadership transition, uncertainty remains over how the country will respond to the attack and how the development will shape the future of Middle East geopolitics.
