The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Joseph Oyewole as a justice of Nigeria’s Supreme Court after lawmakers unanimously adopted a report endorsing his nomination.
The confirmation followed the presentation of findings by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Ondo Central senator Niyi Adegbonmire, which said Oyewole met all requirements for elevation to the apex court.
Presenting the report during plenary, Adegbonmire said the nominee was thoroughly screened and demonstrated strong legal knowledge, sound judgment, and the temperament expected of a Supreme Court justice.

He said committee members were satisfied with Oyewole’s experience and professional conduct, and therefore recommended his confirmation without reservation. The chamber adopted the report without dissent.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate seeking legislative approval for the appointment, following Oyewole’s recommendation by the National Judicial Council at its 110th meeting held on January 13 and 14.
Oyewole currently serves as the presiding justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu division. He fills the South-West slot left vacant by the retirement of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola.

Congratulating him, Senate President Godswill Akpabio prayed for wisdom and fairness as he assumes his new role, saying the appointment would strengthen justice delivery across the country.
He also commended the judiciary committee for its swift work, describing the nomination as a well-matched choice that earned unanimous support from lawmakers.
