The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a detailed weather forecast on July 7, 2025, predicting widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across Nigeria from July 7 to 9, urging proactive measures to mitigate flooding and disruptions.

The alert, released at 9:00 AM WAT, anticipates 60-120 mm of rain in southern states like Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Calabar, and 40-80 mm in northern regions including Kano, Kaduna, and Sokoto, with thunderstorms affecting 85% of the country. The agency attributes the pattern to a strengthened monsoon flow, following June’s 25% above-average rainfall.

NiMet Director General Charles Anosike advised farmers to safeguard 15 million hectares of crops and urged 65% of urban residents, particularly in flood-prone areas like Enugu and Owerri, to clear drainage systems, referencing 2024’s displacement of 6,000 people.

The forecast warns of flash floods and a 45% risk of power outages, with the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency allocating N600 million for flood defenses. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos plans to deploy 300 workers, while 75% of residents in at-risk states prepare evacuations. The prediction impacts 210 million people, highlighting climate adaptation needs amid 33% inflation.
