HOUSTON, United States, June 15 — Four-time champions Germany began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion with a 7-1 victory over tournament debutants Curacao in their Group E opener on Sunday.
Despite a spirited performance from the Caribbean nation, Germany’s superior quality eventually proved overwhelming as Julian Nagelsmann’s side cruised to a comfortable win at Houston’s NRG Stadium.
The result places Germany in a strong position early in the group stage, while Curacao, appearing at their first-ever World Cup, face an uphill task in their remaining fixtures against Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
The occasion marked a historic moment for Curacao, a Caribbean island nation with a population of approximately 160,000 that qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament.
The underdogs briefly stunned Germany when midfielder Livano Comenencia scored the country’s first-ever World Cup goal to level the score at 1-1 midway through the first half.
However, the joy was short-lived as Germany regained control and never looked back.
Curacao captain Leandro Bacuna and his teammates fought bravely throughout the contest, earning applause from supporters who travelled in large numbers to witness the nation’s historic debut on football’s biggest stage.
Germany took the lead after just six minutes through Felix Nmecha, who finished a slick move involving Florian Wirtz.
Comenencia’s equaliser briefly threatened to create one of the biggest surprises of the tournament, but Germany restored their advantage before the break through defender Nico Schlotterbeck, who headed home from a corner.
Moments later, Kai Havertz converted a penalty after Nmecha was fouled inside the area, giving Germany a 3-1 halftime lead.
Any hopes of a Curacao comeback disappeared within a minute of the restart when Jamal Musiala made it 4-1 with a first-time finish from a pass by captain Joshua Kimmich.
Goals from Nathaniel Brown and substitute Deniz Undav further extended Germany’s lead before Havertz completed the scoring with his second goal of the match late on.
The match also marked a significant personal achievement for Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who became only the second goalkeeper in history to appear at five FIFA World Cups.
Although largely untroubled throughout the encounter, Neuer was unable to prevent Comenencia’s historic strike, which will remain a memorable moment in Curacao’s football history despite the heavy defeat.
Before the match, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann had described the encounter as a “David versus Goliath” contest and cautioned his players against underestimating their opponents.
His side ultimately delivered a professional and dominant performance, showcasing the attacking depth that makes Germany one of the favourites for the title.
For Curacao and veteran coach Dick Advocaat, the result was disappointing but unlikely to overshadow the significance of the country’s first appearance at the World Cup.
While the scoreline reflected the gulf in experience and quality between the two teams, Curacao’s historic first goal on football’s grandest stage ensured the day will remain a landmark moment for the island nation.
